There is a consumption of mercury when using any mercury porosimeter. The quantity consumed can be minimized by using the appropriate penetrometer in an efficient manner for each analysis. That is, do not use a large penetrometer when there is only a small quantity of sample. The sample should take up most of the volume of the penetrometer cup. But, remember, the volume of the stem must be sufficient to fill the estimated total porosity of the sample volume. Additionally, waste mercury can be significantly reduced if retained and sent to a recycler.
