How Is Water Purity Tested?

You use water for your experiments every day, but how much confidence do you have in its purity? Fortunately, you don’t have to check that it satisfies your needs each time you use it, as there are systems in place in most laboratories to make sure it is what it says on the tin. However, it’s still good to know how those tests are conducted, so that you can troubleshoot your experimental problems if you’re suspicious of your water. Regardless, as a scientist you may well find the testing process intriguing from a technical perspective.

Lab Equipment Questions for the Experts

Connecting ProStar UV-Vis 310 detector to PC
The model is actually UV-Vis 310 - it has a male and female 9 pin connector that mates with an external small plug in PCB card that resembles a break-out board. Screw connections are labelled Start_IN+ , Start_IN-, Ready_IN +/- and Fault_IN+/- (6 pins total), Start_OUT+/-, Ready_OUT+/- and Fault_OUT+/- (6 pins total). There are also GND, Ready_IN_enable (active LOW), +5V and TB1 signal lines. My question is, how do I connect this instrument to my PC running Star Chromatography Workstation version 6.2? Also, does anyone have any manuals that might help me sort this out? Advise this member.

Branson Ultrasonics/Branson 8510 - New timer
What would a timer for our Branson 8500 Model number 8510R-MTH cost? Our heater has gone out and we had a repair guy come and wants us to get a new timer as he thinks this might fix the heating problem. We have no problem in our minds with the timer. So I am wondering how much he is going to want to sell us a timer for? Second question, is the heat necessary to clean surgical instruments? It looks like to me it was might for a better cleaning job? Advise this member.
