Product Focus: GC Columns

As regulators have redefined environmental methods for low-abundance analytes, and demanded the analysis of more analytes, column manufacturers have done well to provide greater sensitivity and selectivity. “Adding more compounds to the list causes co-elution issues that are difficult to resolve,” says Kory Kelly, technical manager for GC and environmental at Phenomenex (Torrance, CA).

One strategy for meeting the challenges of modern environmental analysis is to fine-tune selectivity to specific methods, e.g., pesticides in water or halogenated contaminants in soil, or to specific analyte categories. At the same time vendors have improved detectors, offered multiple detector modes, and introduced sample preparation methods that remove matrix while enriching analytes.

VistaLab Technologies Ovation M

Ovation M models combine ergonomic performance with a conventional analog volume setting capability. The contoured shape and adjustable hook means a custom fit for every user in the laboratory. The unique design promotes ergonomically-correct posture during pipetting, such as neutral forearm and wrist positions, which allow muscle groups to function freely without restriction or stress. Significantly lower pipetting forces are also achieved with Ovation’s patented tip acquisition and discard system, and low force plunger.

Company News Hot Off The Press

Falcon's tough and truly ready CALIDUS brings the promise of the micro GC to reality.
The pioneering concept of the micro gas chromatograph offered considerable promise of improvement. The micro GC would eliminate the large, high thermal mass oven required to heat columns in traditional GC designs. Size and energy consumption would be drastically reduced. Transportability would become real and practical.  Read more.

Questions from the Vault

We have so many questions filling our forums that sometimes questions can be missed and go without answers. Can you help us provide solutions for these users with unanswered questions?

Agilent 7820 Safety Shutdown/Re-start problem
We have three Agilent 7820's using Open Lab software and all exhibit the same problem in that if while working on the instrument or loss of gases, etc. the instrument shuts down, it can not be made to re-start by re-loading the method, telling the detector to re-ignite, etc. It is necessary to shut down both the instrument and software and restart each in order for the instrument to accept commands again. A tremendous inconvenience and flaw in the software. We much prefer older versions of Chemstation but Agilent will not provide those anymore. Advise this member.

GC 3800 pfpd
1. How in can get for gain factor during building method? 2. Use square root or don't use during building method? 3. Why we use gate delay and width delay during building method . Advise this member.

Agilent 3000 Micro GC Hardware Problems
Hi, I'm experiencing problems with a module in my microGC. The TCD is always off and when I send a method it says: hardware problem. I have checked the flow of carrier gas and it seems to be ok. Does it mean that the detector is damaged? In the configuration setup the setpoint is 0 and "flags=4". Advise this member.
