Top 3 Things You May Not Know About Sample Prep for Chromatography

1. A recent trend in this area of technology is that users looking to reduce workloads and analysis times, at lower cost, often begin with sample preparation. Users are clearly looking to reduce the amount of sample prep they do.

2. Another development is that lipid depletion is increasingly applied in the analysis of foods and samples outside the life sciences, which has led to various kits for removing this class of interfering species.

3. Also, the proliferation of QuEChERS and similar approaches to sample prep leaves end users with more choices than for, say, columns. As a result, chromatographers need to be more cognizant than ever of sample characteristics and purification capabilities.

Help your Colleagues

Plenty of discussions are happening on LabWrench all the time. We have many questions come in daily from users that are seeking advice from fellow users and lab professionals on LabWrench. Can you help any of these users find the answers they are looking for?

Error 358 - More details in centrifuged error.
The display machine only shows error 358 as a centrifuge error but I need more details to perform a possible reparation. The manual said that is a centrifuged problem, but it doesn´t give more information that is needed. Advise this member.

Sirius GLpKa - Technical Support
I am having problem in uploading data from the memory of GLpKa instrument to PC, getting following error msg.: problem loading dataset, left in text format Error: unable to create directory C:\\... Reason: The filename, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect Upload fail. Serial communication is timeout. Advise this member.

XIT plus 800
I have purchased a used Bineat "Special XIT plus 800. Since the anometer indicated that its performance is less than 0.3 and it is buzzing all the time, we thought that the impeller is too old. Therefore, we replaced it with a new impeller. However, it did not help. It seems that the problem is in adjusting the fan speed. Could you direct us how to do it? or supply us with the operating manual that directly explain how to do it. We checked the electricity and we don’t see any potentiometer near the impeller. Advise this member.

Company News Hot Off The Press

Shimadzu's UV-3600 Plus UV-VIS-NIR Spectrophotometer Offers High-Sensitivity, High-Resolution Analyses for a Wide Range of Applications
The UV-3600 Plus UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometer is equipped with three detectors - PMT (photomultiplier tube) for ultraviolet and visible regions, and InGaAs and cooled PbS detectors for the near-infrared region - to ensure high sensitivity across the entire measured wavelength range. Compared to spectrophotometers with only PMT and PbS detectors, the UV-3600 Plus significantly reduces noise level to assure high-accuracy measurements across the entire wavelength range.  Read more.

Leica Microsystems Presents Universal Hybrid Detector for Single Molecule Detection and Imaging at SfN and ASCB
Leica Microsystems introduces the Leica HyD SMD universal hybrid photodetector with superior characteristics for single molecule detection (SMD), which allows precise measurement of concentration and observation of fast cellular processes. It was presented at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) 2014 in Washington, D.C., and will also be shown at the annual meeting of the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB), in Philadelphia, PA, USA from December 6 to 10.  Read more.

Optimizing Workflow with 96- & 384-well Microplates
INTEGRA has introduced a Three Position Stage for its VIAFLO 96 and VIAFLO 384 handheld benchtop pipettes. The new accessory expands available stage positions for microplates, reservoirs and tips on a VIAFLO 96 or VIAFLO 384 from 2 to 3 thereby enhancing workflow in a wide range of applications. Beneficially the Three Position Stage also features an indexing function to allow access to 384-well plates using a 96-channel pipetting head.  Read more.

Questions from the Vault

We have so many questions filling our forums that sometimes questions can be missed and go without answers. Can you help us provide answers for these users with unanswered questions?

Mystaire Misonix Aura Ductless Hoods - Air Flow
We have an aura au-750e unit with HEPA filters mounted on a walk-in portable hood. Is it possible to have it changed to down-flow instead of up-flow? Advise this member.

Metrohm 848 Titrino Plus - Reproduction of results
I have permanent problems with the reproduction of titration curves, using 848 Titrino plus, even for the simplest titration, 0.02 N HNO3 with 0.02 N NaOH. For the titrations, made in the same day, the equipment displays different allure (form) of curve just in the vicinity of the equivalence point. When I calculate the first derivative, using the Origin 6.1 program), I obtain different values of V(NaOH) and pH at the equivalence point (EP), while the apparatus shows other values. Advise this member.

Dionex ASE 35 - Heat-up times
Using the 100mL cell, aqueous solution. Oven set at 200C. Is the heat-up profile known, or can it be determined. The manual says it takes 9 minutes to reach equilibrium temperature however I am interested to know the exact temperatures in the cell as it warms up. Advise this member.
