Lab Survival Guide

Many of us have spent years in the lab, learning the numerous short cuts, the omitted steps from the protocols and the unsaid dos and don’ts. For those new to the lab, the world of whirring equipment, white coats and focussed study can be pretty daunting! We have therefore taken it upon ourselves to hand down some of our hard-earned knowledge to the lab newbies. Whether you’re a wide-eyed PhD student or a new starter in a CRO, take heed of our ten point guide and you’ll be hobnobbing with the lab veterans in no time.

Questions from the Vault

We have so many questions filling our forums that sometimes questions can be missed and go without answers. Can you help us provide answers for these users with unanswered questions?

Varian/3900 - Not ready
We have a Varian 3900 with Star Chromatography Workstation System Control Version 6.20. After a few runs, a TCD error appears. Parameters change for the TCD from Set 150 and actual 150 to Set FAULT and actual 150. When this happens, Detector parameter on the GC shows Det. Temp. ####. pound sign instead of the values. If I change the temperature or turn off the detector in the method an re-activate the method nothing happens. Rebooting the GC seems to fix the problem for a few runs. Any ideas?  Advise this member.

Tecan/Infinite 200 PRO - Cover removal
How does the cover come off? There is a microplate stuck inside. I would also like to replace the lamp. Advise this member.

ITC/Hemochron® Signature Elite - Bios error e2
I have a Hemochron signature elite. When I turn it on, at the top it displays "bios error e2". Any ideas on how to fix it? Advise this member.
