Product Focus: Pipettes

In my days in the lab, a pipette seemed about as impersonal as a lab tool could get. Today’s world of scientific equipment offers many ways to personalize your pipetting. For old-school scientists like me, though, the first question is: why personalize a pipette?

The fun and efficiency of personalization

Raymond Mercier, vice president and general manager of liquid handling consumables at Thermo Fisher Scientific, which is headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts, provides one answer. He says, “Selecting which pipette to use, and why, has a lot to do with personal preference.” He goes on to say, “The decision to use a particular brand, format, or style of pipette is based on what feels comfortable to the scientist using the tool.”

Malvern Instruments MicroCal ITC range

MicroCal ITC isothermal titration calorimeters are used to study a wide range of biomolecular interactions. The applications range from drug design to fundamental research such as the understanding and regulation of signal transduction pathways. These systems deliver direct, label free and in-solution measurements of binding affinity and thermodynamic parameters in a single experiment. They have high sensitivity, low sample consumption and options for automation to minimize ‘hands on’ time.

Read more about the MicroCal ITC range on the Malvern website.

D-Star Instruments DLC-20/DLC-20P

The DLC-20 and DLC-20P are complete HPLC systems with a variable wavelength detector built in at the price of most variable wavelength detectors alone. They combine a precision UV-Vis detector operating between 195-800nm with a time tested single piston pump to form low cost isocratic systems. Although not designed to replace the more expensive and larger systems, the DLC-20 and 20P, with their small size, price, and versatility are an ideal answer for routine QC analysis.

Help your Colleagues

Plenty of discussions are happening on LabWrench all the time. We have many questions come in daily from users that are seeking advice from fellow users and lab professionals on LabWrench. Can you help any of these users find the answers they are looking for?

Hach Company DR 2000 - Absorbance Max
I tried to measure the absorbance for some micro algae. But if the zero is ok (distilled water), the absorbance is always 4.5. Do you know why? Advise this member.

Varian CP-3800 - Column gas flow
The column gas flow does not keep stable if split is open. I even reach the GC stabilization for a new injection if split is configured at the beginning or in the end of the run. Can someone guest what the problem is? Looking at how to solve this, I realized that I may need to calibrate the gas flow, using the round black button "flow control". However, I do not know how without specific tools. Could someone explain to me how to do this? Advise this member.

Hach Company AutoCAT 9000 - After calibrating
After calibrating autocat 9000 and results are accepted, I still can not get the "SUNNY" icon to come up on titrant icon. Can you help?  Advise this member.

Thermo Scientific MaxQ 4450 - Shaker table binding
Seemed like a motor problem at first but the shaker table is binding at one point in the orbit. The 2 bearings in the rear are very loose on their shafts. All bearings have been replaced in the unit and the motor has been serviced. Advise this member.

Lab-Line Lab Rotator 1314 - Broken belt
The silicon belt is broken. I bought a new one but it was not the same quality as the original one. Anyone know a better one to buy? Advise this member.

Shimadzu XRD-6000 - Analyzing
I have to make an XRD test on this device but I don't know how to get the residual stress from the result from the test . Can you please tell me how? Advise this member.
