The Shrinking Mass Spectrometer
Scientists from Sandia National Laboratory reported, in 2005, a microfabricated mass spectrometer-on-a-chip. This was followed by a report, in Nature Nanotechnology, that researchers at the California Institute of Technology had used nanoscale technology to create a microscopic “spectrometer” with single-molecule sensitivity. (See our May issue for a report on Microsaic’s introduction of a chip-sized MS). Learn more

How It Works: A Third-Generation Biobanking System
Problem: A high percentage of biological samples are stored in first- and second-generation biobanks that may affect sample integrity. Even if initial sample quality is high, certain storage and handling techniques degrade quality over the long term1, putting these samples at risk for degradation before they are used in downstream assays... Microplate Handlers
Microplate handlers developed around the need to further automate liquid handling beyond its original function of dispensing fluids. “Integrating plate movement was a secondary feature,” says Eric Matthews, Midwest sales manager for BMG LABTECH (Chicago, IL). Today, robotics is central to integrating one or more devices with liquid handling. Learn more

Filter motor failure
I have a Beckman DU-64 spectrophotometer. At the power up diagnostics displays: "filter motor failure, start-up aborted". What can i do? its an old instrument, and ia can not find users manual. Please help me. View this discussion

Analysis of protein isolated using TriReagent protocol
I wonder will there be any huge effect on the mass spectra if my protein to be analyse was extracted using TriReagent protocol. My concern is that the protocol use 2.5% glycerol for washing while we know glycerol is not compatible with the system. I'm quite confused here, is the buffer compatibility refer to the final elution or every buffer being used throughout the extraction? Provide an answer

Non-invasive monitoring of biogas storage tanks
Optical gas imaging using the FLIR GF320 offers tangible benefits compared to traditional biogas leak "sniffers" because it can scan a broader area much more rapidly and monitor areas that are difficult to reach with contact measurement tools. The portable camera also greatly improves operator safety, by detecting emissions at a safe distance. Read more
