Focus on Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy

Whether its typical samples are liquids, solids, or gases, nearly every laboratory has an ultraviolet-visible spectrometer that serves as a workhorse for dozens of applications. In terms of cost/effort versus capabilities, UV-Vis instruments are arguably the great bargain of lab instrumentation.

Since Howard Cary at Applied Physics Corp. introduced the first commercial recording UV-Vis spectrophotometer in 1947, improvements have been steady, particularly with respect to detector technology (e.g., today’s photodiode array) and source technology (xenon flash lamp).

“These advances have enhanced productivity with faster scan rates while greatly simplifying sample preparation,” says Travis Burt, product manager at Agilent Technologies (Santa Clara, CA). Performance improvements have been supported by rapid advances in electronics, firmware, and software controls, making today’s UV-Vis spectrophotometers more flexible, adaptable, compact, and easier to use than ever.

Varian CP-3800 GC Viability
My lab was just donated a Varian CP-3800 GC-FID and I am wondering is it still a viable platform in terms of still finding parts and consumables for this unit. The company that donated it said it was still in working condition and it did come with the PC and Galaxie (I am not sure what version). Please advise if this system is still useable.  Provide advice

Contamination in the Lab is costly.
Those working in labs may be familiar with the issue of starting a cell line or thawing a stock tube only for it to become contaminated days later.  Lab professionals spend hours countless cleaning their incubators after a contamination incident.  Lost time and experiments due to contamination are exasperating. Contamination issues aren’t just frustrating, they are costly.  Learn how MIDSCI can help you to avoid costly contamination.

A new Peltier Cooler for OPTIC GC inlet
As of now, the GC inlet is mostly cooled using liquid nitrogen (LN2) or liquid CO2. In addition to the known safety issues, the use of the cryogenic cooling increases the analysis cost. A high running cost of the inlet cooling can be greatly reduced by replacing the cryogenic system with a Peltier cooler. Possible light source polarization effect on Varian Cary 5000
I use Cary5000 to measure thin film optical filters. When I need to measure filters in non-normal incidence, the measurement is really different (in terms of spectrum waveform) and dependent of the inclination axis the filter is positioned for measurement. Even for nude plates of glass like B270, the transmittance for inclination in the horizontal axis is around 82%, and for vertical axis is around 95%. It seems as light polarization effect is the main reason. Could please help me?
