Symyx Notebook by Accelrys speeds small and large molecule development, improving process efficiency, collaboration and compliance in advancing therapeutics from lab to patient

SAN DIEGO, Calif., March 24, 2011 – Accelrys, Inc. (NASDAQ: ACCL), a leading scientific enterprise R&D software and services company, today announced the availability of Symyx Notebook by Accelrys v. 6.6 as a multidisciplinary electronic lab notebook (ELN) supporting analytical, process and formulation scientists working in the chemistry, manufacturing and controls (CMC) area of drug development.

The multidisciplinary Symyx Notebook by Accelrys enables cross-disciplinary teams to collaborate more effectively in moving therapeutic substances and related information from research through development to early manufacturing using efficient, validated and compliant processes. With no custom coding required, the notebook offers out-of-the-box (configurable) capabilities supporting analytical, process and formulation teams working in small and large molecule development.

“The increasing diversity and complexity of product pipelines and delivery methods in pharmaceutical development today is demanding that organizations do a better job harmonizing processes, corporate ontology, data access and knowledge capture across the R&D continuum,” said Accelrys Vice President and Chief Science Officer Dr. Frank Brown. “Harmonizing processes and data across pharmaceutical development streamlines technology transfer, accelerates drug products to clinical trials and improves the success rate of regulatory dossier submittals.”

“This industry advance for drug development is also a clear demonstration of how Accelrys’ new Enterprise R&D Architecture accelerates innovation across the R&D value chain,” said Dr. Trevor Heritage, executive vice president of software products at Accelrys. “An easily configurable, multidisciplinary notebook supporting analytical, process and formulation scientists speeds route, method and formulation selection and optimization. By streamlining information and technology transfer, Symyx Notebook by Accelrys improves process efficiency, accelerates regulatory submissions and speeds downstream scale-up to manufacturing.”

Integration of Symyx Notebook by Accelrys with existing laboratory information management systems (LIMS), scientific data management systems (SDMS), chromatography data systems (CDS) and other lab informatics solutions optimizes IP collection and transfer between scientific domains by ensuring consistent, accurate information storage and data processing. For example, integration between Symyx Notebook by Accelrys and Thermo Scientific Watson LIMS enables scientists to electronically pass bio-analytical testing results, sample lists, drug metabolism/pharmacokinetics studies and reports between the ELN and the LIMS. This reduces time-consuming manual transcription and data manipulation errors that can cause regulatory compliance issues.

For organizations working toward Quality by Design, Symyx Notebook by Accelrys centrally captures reportable information acquired over the development lifecycle, helping scientists acquire and demonstrate a better understanding of product and process variability within the established design space. Likewise, notebook support for “review by exception” methodologies shortens time to market and lowers costs by enabling quality assurance personnel to complete reviews quickly with fewer deviations and less wasted material.

The Accelrys Enterprise R&D Architecture and Drug Development

The Accelrys Enterprise R&D Architecture, built on the Pipeline Pilot™ platform, offers a unified software portfolio with configurable applications that can be tailored to optimize the diversity of science, experimental processes and information requirements encountered across drug development. Pipeline Pilot’s built-in chemistry and biology Component Collections help move innovative therapeutics quickly and cost-effectively from lab to patient by streamlining key development functions that improve process efficiency, quality and compliance. Complementing and extending the ELN, Accelrys Isentris® decision support software leverages in-house and commercial synthesis and sourcing databases to speed route selection and optimization. The Accelrys Lab Operations suite streamlines the management and tracking of work requests, equipment, containers, samples and other critical objects encountered in development workflows. Lastly, Accelrys Materials Studio software enables scientists to predict product stability and aggregation through modeling and simulation of crystal structures and crystallization processes, reducing the number and cost of experiments in the pre-formulation stage of product development.
