X-ray diffraction has undoubtedly been integral towards materials science research. We want to gather the XRD community to share knowledge and gain ideas on how to improve materials research. For the upcoming series of Malvern Panalytical’s XRD workshops across the Asia Pacific region, we have invited our leading specialist, Dr Umesh Tiwari, to share his knowledge. We are proud to be partnering the Chapter of Singapore Crystallographers and NTU FACTS for this workshop.

Dr Tiwari is the Global Product Manager for Malvern Panalytical, specialising in advanced materials. His specialty is in thin films research using X-ray diffraction. Alongside esteemed researchers from Nanyang Technological University - Dr Samuel Morris and Dr Liu Weiling, the team will take you through the basics of X-ray diffraction.

In this tailored XRD workshop, we will focus a lot on learning how to collect good data as well as how to properly analyse and interpret the data. Dr Tiwari will showcase how to perform phase identification, phase quantification as well as Rietveld refinement on Malvern Panalytical's HighScore software. As this is a hands on session, each participant will be issued a trial software license. Please bring along your laptop for this classroom exercise.

Speakers

About Dr Tiwari
Dr Tiwari is the Global Product Manager for Advanced Materials at Malvern Panalytical. He has close to 20 years of experience in X-ray analytical methodology, instrumentation and analytical techniques. Prior to joining Malvern Panalytical, he worked with Tata Research as well as the Solid State Physics Laboratory as a senior scientist in India. He specializes in materials analysis using X-ray diffraction, particularly for pharmaceuticals, semiconductor, energy and data storage, cement, metals and industrial minerals.

About Dr Morris
Dr Morris is a key member of the Chapter of Singapore Crystallographers. He primarily uses X-ray diffraction (single-crystal, powder and PDF) to study the structure of a variety of materials, specializing in advanced in-situ studies of porous materials using synchrotron radiation. Dr Morris undertook his undergraduate and Masters of Chemistry at The University of Southampton, UK and his PhD at The University of St Andrews, UK. Dr Morris is now a Research Fellow at FACTS, a characterization centre at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

About Dr Liu
Dr Liu is a Research Fellow in the Facility for Analysis, Characterisation, Testing and Simulation (FACTS), Dr Liu’s research includes microstructural and quantitative analysis of powder X-ray diffraction data. She received her PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore in 2017.
