J2-MI lid release

Hi Don,

I’ve got a J2-MI that won’t release the lid, except manually through the emergency access hole. The solenoid that releases the latch handle doesn’t operate, though it does move freely by hand. I also noticed the motor won’t start. Everything functions on the operator panel, but when I press start nothing happens with the drive. The timer begins counting down, but then gives a “Speed” error after about 15 seconds. The drive belt is ok, the safety connector is joined, and the motor turns freely by hand. The lid switch is secure and ohms out good, and I can hear it click over when the lid eyebolt contacts it. The compressor runs with the lid open. Does the high voltage board discussion on the recent J2-21 thread apply here as well?

Don,

First off, Merry Christmas to you and yours, and thanks for all the help you've given me (and everyone else on the site) this last year.

I've replaced every IC on all three switch boards, still no progress. Have you had a chance to dig up your old prints?

Jeff, Sorry that it took so long to get back to you but I finally was able to dig out my service manual for the J2M series centrifuges.  The troubleshooting chart says that if the LED's on the switch boards are not lit then check F101 on the inverter chassis.

Is DS301 lit on the other board down near the 3 switch boards?  If that is the case then you have what is called an open current feedback loop.  If F101 is blown along with R104 being burned would probably mean that the SCR bridge pack designated CR106 on the chassis is probably shorted.

Check these items out if you haven't already and get back to me.

Don

DS301 was on. I know I checked F101 back in July and it was good. Today it was 10 ohms in circuit so I pulled it out for a better look and then it read open. Replaced it and we're back up. Yikes - all that for a flaky fuse. We were this close to tossing it. Thanks Don!

Jeff, Again I apologize for taking so long to get back to you but my storage locker is 6+ hours away from where I live now and I just run out of time in doing everything I need to do while there.

Having said all of that, really happy that you are back up and running.  Amazing how having literatureagain can make a difference in fixing something.  Take care and feel free to get back to me again if you have any other issues with Beckman centrifuges, spectrophotometers, or LS counters. My email is wwalkingscrewdriver@yahoo.com .Don

Don, absolutely no need to apologize, you're providing a lot of free help and advice and there's nothing to complain about. We're all grateful I'm sure. And besides, I now have a complete J2-MI motor control electronics overhaul spare parts kit  :-D. Thanks again, and for the email! I'll be in touch. Jeff
