Binding Issue

I am wondering if anyone has any ideas as to how I might resolve a slight binding issue with a Shandon Finesse 325 Microtome. It seems to occur when it advances the orientation head assembly. The Lab Technician indicated that it was producing uneven wax thickness as well. I tried the Preventive Maintenance procedure outlined in the manual with no improvement. Thermo Electron's technical support suggested having them do a PM at almost half the cost of a new one. Any input would be appreciated.

Here are some suggestions from the Shandon FE manual that may help: Blunt knife Knife angle too shallow Specimen not secure Knife holder loose Specimen temperature incorrect I had an old Reichert of similar design with the same problem. There was excessive wear in machined parts in the knife holder assembly, and rebuilding was half the cost of replacing so it was traded in for new. I hope that helps!

From the symptoms you describe it sounds like it does need a full PM. A third-party service company can save you a lot of money compared to having the manufacturer PM it. For example, our rates are $95 per hour for labor plus any parts needed to repair it. You would need to package it and ship to our repair facility. The expected time frame will be about 1 week in our facility. We guarantee that it will work like new again and we give you a 6-month warranty on replacement parts and workmanship. Let me know if we can be of assistance to you. Rankin Biomedical Corporation
