Spurious Errors

Usually spurious errors in the 9700 are caused by a short in the upper lid heating element or a break in the upper lid flex cable. You can tell by shaking the handle or moving the carriage back and forth. If the problem is the heating element, the whole peice must be replaced. The flex line problem is either on the ground to the block or the heating element. Where it bends use a high power magnifier (I use a 4x microscope objective) and you'll probably find a break in the copper. Spurious errors are very rarely caused by anything else.
