"Check that the device is connected properly" trouble

My device is 702 SM Titrino and is failing to connect to the computer. All the connections, especially the com cable seems to be fine but it keeps on saying " the device is connected properly or defected" whenever I try to connect to the desktop. What is the cause of this?
