Mechanical Stage Adjustment x axis

The x-axis (Left/Right) mechanical stage adjustment knob is difficult to turn. I have attempted to loosen the nut at the bottom of the stacked knobs, and adjust to make them easier to turn, with no difference in tension. The y-axis (forward/back) movement remains unchanged. Do I need to completely change out the stage? or is there an adjustment technique that I'm missing? Thank you!
