R1 rotor errors, erratic

I have 2 Beckman J30i units, a unit circa 1996 with auto-rotor ID via RFID and a second unit circa 2006, which does not have the auto-rotor ID. These units were both purchased with fixed-angle rotors JA25.50. The 1996 J30i unit has started throwing R1 "rotor not identified" codes when runs are attempted above 3,000 RPM (about 1,000 x g). The problem seems erratic, and my temporary solution is to pivot to using the newer unit. I've always wondered why the 2006 era J30i was not offered with auto rotor ID. any suggestions would be helpful.

The IRIS system was found to be problematic right from the beginning. The rotor tie down handles were specially and specifically made for each kind of rotor. The wiring harness running up inside of the lid via the door hinge area frequently resulted in cable failures that sometimes required that an entire new door be installed. So there you have it as to the why your centrifuges are different. There were some minor tweaks that could be made to the IRIS control box which I can look up once I dig out my old paper service manual again where I kept the paper copies of those adjustments so I will have to get back to you on this. The other possible issue is that your drive mounts may have started to sag which increase the distance between the the handle of the rotor with the chip inside and the sensor located up in the door. You can sometimes identify that as being the issue if you look at where the drive motor comes up thru the rubber boot. If it looks like it is sagging down into the chamber then that could be what's wrong, too. That requires a major repair job that would require getting the newest style drive mounts (3 required) and a bit of grunt work in order to remove the drive motor and all of the associated cabling and tubing so that you can replace them. Hope this helps. Don

Upgrading or servicing the RFID system on the older unit might fix the "rotor not identified" error. Alternatively, contacting Beckman support could clarify if a retrofit is possible.
