exhaust connections

Hi,

I'm a consulting Engineer and have a couple of questions regrading the connection of the forepump exhaust to the fume hood exhaut system for venting.  The installation guide says to run down then horizontal with the 1" hose provided with the Q-Exactive equipment.  Can I then rise vertically with the 1" hose after the "trap" has been created to connect to my fume hood exuast system tap located at the ceiling?  Please help.

Thanks

Is the forepump an oil sealed mechanical pump? If so, does it have an exhaust mist filter with a drain connection? If you form a low point (trap) in the rubber hose, how woud it be drained? However, taking the 1" hose vertically after the horizontal run is OK. Many labs exhaust the pump right into the fume hood, especially if they use a mist filter. Mist filters are recommended a) to reduce pump noise and b) to clean up the exhaust stream. If there is no mist filter you are blowing oily exhaust into the fume hood exhaust ducts and possibly creating a fire hazard.

Thanks for the advice.  I will make sure the researcher provides a mist filter as teh forepump is a mechanically sealed oil type pump.  Again, thanks for the help.

You're welcome. We supply mist filters and replacement elements for mainly Edwards vacuum pumps, in addition we stock some Solberg and Balston as well. If your researcher needs an oil mist filter, he/she would need to give us the pump model, cfm or l/min of the pump. Most have an NW25 (nom. 1") flanged vacuum connection. Contact is HowardT@VacuumAndLowPressure.com which is also our website. The Edwards EMF filter includes an Odor element, so for this application may not be of much use, but it has the drain connection. The Solberg filter is less money but any oil drains back into the pump, not good if it contaminated but OK if it is clean.
