Plum Creek QC

We are setting up and using a new Spectronic 200.  The default for abs measurement is reading in hundreths.  How do you switch to read in thousandths?  We use 580 wavelength for reading HCHO emissions with the chromotropic wet chemistry method.

The SPEC 200 industry model reads in thousands of an Abs unit up to 0.999A and in hundredths from 1.00A to 2.50A.

If you have the education model, that one reads in hundredths for the full range. 

The Education version has the more limited readout and also lacks the programmable analyzer mode in the firmware.

 


Instruments aren't just beige answer boxes.  If you want confidence in your data you need to understand where it comes from.

I have the industrial model 222-265700 spectronic 200, this spectrophometer is unstable. The reading value is changing each 4 sec ±0.02 abs at 515nm withing the range 0,10 to 0,40  .  The defaut display have 2 digits (0.00) not (0.000)  With a twist i can read 3 digits but reading 3 digits gives nothing all you have is more digits variation.   VisionLite5 is supposed to upgrade the analyser, is VisionLite5 will resolve my problems. Normally a routine analyser display ±0.005 like my spectronic 601 or my Pharmacia Novaspec 2.

Interesting... 

What mode are you running in that you only see two digits?  In the SPEC200 Modern interface you should definitely see three decimal digits between 0.000 and 0.999.  Check to see if the analyzer mode is present in the Modern Interface.  It should be between the Quant and Scan choices.  If it's absent, your instrument is loaded with the education firmware (which would be a manufacturing error).  The firmware is field-upgradable so Thermo Tech Support would be able to email the correct firmware to you.

VISIONlite won't add stability but a firmware upgrade might.  The big "adds" with VISIONlite are 0.5nm wavelength precision, kinetics software and the ability to store your data. 

Have you contacted Thermo's Tech Support group?  If your instrument is still under warranty they may want to bring it to the depot to investigate.  If the instrument was new in June you are certainly within the warranty window.  Assuming that your method is photometric (i.e. absorbance, not scatter) you should not be seeing noise in the second digit at absorbance values below 1A.

Finally, my spectronic 200 was the first series which was unstable. Fisher replaced my unit. The new edition works perfectly.
